Arrive in Hanoi, where colonial facades, hidden alleyways, and the constant rhythm of street life create one of Asia’s most atmospheric capitals. Your driver meets you at Nội Bài and brings you into the city as the streets shift into evening. Check in, then step outside — the Old Quarter is best explored on foot, dinner from a street stall, no agenda, no map required.

A morning moving through the city’s layers — the solemnity of the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, the quiet geometry of One Pillar Pagoda, the scholarly calm of the Temple of Literature. Afternoons belong to West Lake, where Tran Quoc Pagoda’s ancient spires reflect in still water. The day ends with water puppets — a Hanoi tradition that still surprises first-timers.

Leave Hanoi behind and travel east toward Halong Bay, where limestone karsts rise dramatically from emerald waters across the Gulf of Tonkin. Board your cruise by lunchtime — seafood on deck as the towers close in around you. The afternoon is for kayaking into hidden lagoons, swimming in jade-green water, watching the bay empty of other boats by evening.

Wake early for sunrise over the bay before returning to shore and driving back to Hanoi. Later this evening, board the overnight soft-berth train north toward Lào Cai — the journey begins climbing slowly into Vietnam’s northern mountains as the city lights fade behind you.

Arrive surrounded by cool mountain air and terraced hillsides stretching across the valleys below. Descend on foot into Cat Cat Village — H’Mông weavers at their looms, rice fields dropping steeply into the valley. The afternoon is unhurried: the market, Ham Rong’s viewpoint, and a mountain evening that needs no itinerary.

A full day on foot through some of Northern Vietnam’s most beautiful landscapes — Black H’Mông homes in Lao Chải, then the quieter Dzay village of Tả Van where the valley opens wide beneath layered terraces. Lunch is family-style inside a local home: rice wine, garden vegetables, conversation across the language gap.

Drive down to Lao Cai and cross the border at Hekou into Yunnan Province, where the landscape shifts immediately — wider roads, different script, a different rhythm entirely. A scenic drive south through mountain valleys brings you to Yuanyang by evening, the terraces already visible on the hillsides above town.

An all-day immersion in one of the world’s great agricultural landscapes. Duoyishu at first light — terraces catching dawn in copper and gold. Laohuzui’s dramatic Tiger Mouth drop, Bada’s sweeping curves across the mountainside, and village time in Shengcun and Qingkou among the Hani who have farmed these slopes for six centuries.

A final morning at the terraces — Qingkou village sits right at the field edge, life and landscape inseparable. Then a long afternoon drive west to Jianshui, an atmospheric old town of ancient courtyards, narrow stone streets, and fading Qing-era architecture that most itineraries miss entirely.

Morning among the dramatic limestone formations of the Stone Forest — geological theatre on a grand scale, best before the crowds arrive. Then north to Kunming, the City of Eternal Spring, where broad avenues and relaxed teahouses offer a gentler pace after the mountain regions.

A slow final morning — café, last walk, one more bowl of Yunnan noodles if time allows. Your driver takes you to Changshui Airport whenever you’re ready.

For us, Mongolia was definitely the highlight. We thoroughly enjoyed or local guides and drives and they were unfailingly knowledgeable, helpful and amusing. Their languages skills were excellent and we felt that we recieved real insight into this fascinating country. We were intinially drawn to the idea of this trip by the reports of the world class fihing and we were absolutely not disappointed. The fishing guide was first rate and we caught more fish than we could have hoped for - more than 25 each day - with the added bonus of being the only other people in sight for miles arround. AAT created a private ger camp for us on the Onon River and we enjoyed delicious food prepared by our chef in a beautiful unspoled atmosphere. They alo arranged for us to visit a nomadic family and spend time with them at home and organized a dinner with an anthropologist with expert knowledge of the region. AAT fullfilled their promise to tkae us to us to one of the world's best fishing destinations in comfort and style. We would be happy to travel with AAT again and will definitely recommend them to our friends.

For our Siem Reap/Angkor Wat journey, our party of two had a private driver and guide named Jak, who was a cheerful and knowledgeable companion, explaining the history, culture, architecture and religious significance of the sites while keeping it always fun. We moved efficiently from site to site, and finished with a boat tour of the fishing village on stilts at Kampong Pluk on the Tonle Sap Lake. During most of our trip we stayed at top-notch locally-owned hotels, but in Siem Reap we were at the excellent local Hyatt hotel. Absolute Asia and My Way Travel our outstanding local providers, less expensive than name-brand group tours, and customized to our interests and schedule.
