A Private Journey Through South Korea

Ancient Palaces & Coastal Cities – Private South Korea Tour

This private South Korea tour connects Seoul, Gyeongju, and Busan over nine days, combining royal palaces, ancient history, and life along Korea’s southern coast.

Seoul doesn’t ease you in. A 600-year-old palace sits behind a six-lane highway, and the locals walk past without looking up. Three hours south on the KTX, Busan greets you with salt air and the noise of Jagalchi Fish Market as it comes to life each morning. Then there’s Gyeongju, where royal burial mounds from a thousand years ago sit beside cafés, and no one finds that strange.

Nine days. Three cities. Most visitors arrive expecting Seoul to be the highlight. Many leave talking about Gyeongju.

Tour Highlights

  • Gyeongbokgung Palace, 57 buildings set against Bugaksan Mountain, and a royal guard ceremony that has run on schedule for centuries.
  • The DMZ: a tunnel dug 73 metres underground, and a bridge where more than 12,000 prisoners of war once crossed to the South.
  • Cross the peninsula by KTX at speeds of up to 325km/h. Put your phone down for the mountain section.
  • Gyeongju: a 6th-century temple, a stone Buddha catching the first light of dawn, and royal burial mounds rising unexpectedly from the middle of the city.
  • Busan’s fish market before the crowds arrive, a hillside village still very much lived in, and a temple built directly on the rocks above the sea.

Highlights

Itinerary idea

  • 1

Your private driver meets you at Incheon and transfers you into the city. Myeongdong comes alive after dark, street food vendors set up along the main streets and the crowds build quickly. A good evening to walk without a plan.

    Overnight Seoul.

  • 2

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

A full day with your private guide through the city’s older districts. Gyeongbokgung Palace, Bukchon Hanok Village, lunch in one of Seoul’s market streets where vendors have been cooking at the same stalls for decades. The afternoon through Insadong before climbing to Naksan Park as the city settles into dusk.

    Overnight Seoul.

  • 3

    Meals: Breakfast

An hour north of Seoul, past military checkpoints, to the border dividing North and South Korea. Dora Observatory, the Third Infiltration Tunnel, Freedom Bridge. Quieter and heavier than most people expect.

    Overnight Seoul.

  • 4

    Meals: Breakfast

Board the KTX south to Busan, less than three hours through changing landscape. Busan arrives differently from Seoul. More open, shaped by the sea. The afternoon is yours.

    Overnight Busan.

  • 5

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

Drive inland to Gyeongju, where royal burial mounds rise quietly beside ordinary roads and UNESCO-listed temples sit beneath pine-covered hills. One of those places that stays with you longer than expected.

    Overnight Busan.

  • 6

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

Jagalchi Fish Market in the morning, vendors cleaning fish by hand while restaurant owners negotiate over the day’s catch. Gamcheon Culture Village in the afternoon: painted houses, steep stairways, still very much a working neighbourhood.

    Overnight Busan.

  • 7

    Meals: Breakfast

Northeast along the coast to Haedong Yonggungsa, a temple built directly on coastal rock with waves breaking below the platforms. No mountain enclosure, no forest quiet. Just open sea.

    Overnight Busan.

  • 8

    Meals: Breakfast

The KTX north, the same journey in reverse. One final afternoon in the capital: Seongsu for coffee shops in converted industrial spaces, or back through the older neighbourhoods north of the river.

    Overnight Seoul.

  • 9

    Meals: Breakfast

Private transfer to Incheon for your onward flight. Most people leave already thinking about what they’d do differently next time.

We had a wonderful 12-day trip across Thailand, beautifully arranged by Mr. Stephen from Absolute Asia. Every detail was taken care of, from comfortable stays to fully organized vegetarian meals throughout the journey. Our itinerary covered Bangkok, Ayutthaya, Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, then we spent five blissful days in Koh Samui. There, we relaxed on palm-fringed beaches, explored Ang Thong Marine Park by boat, and savored fresh tropical fruits at sunset. A big shoutout to our lovely guide, Mr Krit who made the experience even more special with him warmth and knowledge. We’re heading home with unforgettable memories of Thailand’s hospitality and charm. Thank you, Absolute Asia Tours.

Our recent trip to China and Mongolia was a great success. Overall we found Absolute Asia Tours services to be excellent throughout the two weeks we were in Asia. For us, Mongolia was definitely the highlight. We thoroughly enjoyed or local guides and drives and they were unfailingly knowledgeable, helpful and amusing. Their languages skills were excellent and we felt that we recieved real insight into this fascinating country. We were intinially drawn to the idea of this trip by the reports of the world class fihing and we were absolutely not disappointed. The fishing guide was first rate and we caught more fish than we could have hoped for - more than 25 each day - with the added bonus of being the only other people in sight for miles arround. AAT created a private ger camp for us on the Onon River and we enjoyed delicious food prepared by our chef in a beautiful unspoled atmosphere. They alo arranged for us to visit a nomadic family and spend time with them at home and organized a dinner with an anthropologist with expert knowledge of the region. AAT fullfilled their promise to tkae us to us to one of the world's best fishing destinations in comfort and style. We would be happy to travel with AAT again and will definitely recommend them to our friends.

Absolute Asia tours gave us a wonderful tour of Southeast Asia (working with sister-agency My Way Travel based in Vietnam). For our Siem Reap/Angkor Wat journey, our party of two had a private driver and guide named Jak, who was a cheerful and knowledgeable companion, explaining the history, culture, architecture and religious significance of the sites while keeping it always fun. We moved efficiently from site to site, and finished with a boat tour of the fishing village on stilts at Kampong Pluk on the Tonle Sap Lake. During most of our trip we stayed at top-notch locally-owned hotels, but in Siem Reap we were at the excellent local Hyatt hotel. Absolute Asia and My Way Travel our outstanding local providers, less expensive than name-brand group tours, and customized to our interests and schedule.
