Classic South Korea Tour
Seoul, Gyeongju, Busan & Jeju Island
The first thing you notice isn’t the palaces. It’s the smell of grilling meat and sesame oil drifting through Seoul’s market streets. A few days later you’ll be standing inside a thousand-year-old temple in Gyeongju, then watching fishing boats return to harbour in Busan. The journey ends on Jeju Island, where lava tubes run beneath the ground and Hallasan rises above the centre of the island. Twelve days. Four very different sides of Korea.

- Explore Seoul with a private guide, including Gyeongbokgung Palace, Bukchon Hanok Village, Insa-dong and Namdaemun Market.
- Visit the DMZ, Dora Observatory and the Third Infiltration Tunnel on Korea’s heavily guarded northern border.

- Spend three days on Jeju Island exploring volcanic landscapes, Udo Island, Manjanggul Lava Tube and Hallasan, South Korea’s highest peak.

Private transfer from the airport into the city. The rest of the day is yours. Myeongdong or Insadong both work well for a first evening, street food vendors out from early evening and restaurants filling quickly as locals finish work.

Meals: Breakfast
A full day with your private guide. Begin at Gyeongbokgung Palace before the crowds arrive, then continue to Bukchon Hanok Village where traditional houses still line the narrow streets. Stop at Namdaemun Market for lunch before spending the afternoon exploring Insadong’s galleries, tea houses, and small independent shops.

Travel north to the border dividing North and South Korea. Visit Dora Observatory, the Third Infiltration Tunnel, and Freedom Bridge. Quieter and heavier than most people expect. Back in Seoul, spend the evening exploring the backstreets of Insadong on a food tour. Korean pancakes, grilled skewers, traditional rice wine, and small restaurants that most visitors walk straight past.

Meals: Breakfast
Board the KTX to Gyeongju, capital of the Silla Kingdom for nearly a thousand years. Spend the afternoon at Daereungwon and Tumuli Park, where grass-covered royal burial mounds rise unexpectedly from the middle of the city. One of the more unusual city skylines in Asia.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch
Continue exploring Gyeongju with visits to Bulguksa Temple and Seokguram Grotto. Both are UNESCO World Heritage Sites and remain among Korea’s most important Buddhist landmarks. Later in the afternoon, drive south to Busan.

Start at Busan Tower for views across the harbour and surrounding hills. Continue to Jagalchi Fish Market where vendors clean fish by hand while restaurant owners negotiate over the morning catch. The alleys around Bupyeong Market smell of charcoal smoke and sesame oil. Busan is considered Korea’s culinary capital. By the end of the day it’s not hard to understand why.

Meals: Breakfast
Visit Gamcheon Culture Village, where colourful houses climb steep hillsides above the harbour. Despite its popularity, it remains a real residential neighbourhood. Later, follow the coast to Haedong Yonggungsa, one of the few Korean temples built directly beside the sea. No mountain enclosure, no forest quiet. Just open water and waves breaking below the stone platforms.

A short flight brings you to Jeju Island. Meet your guide and spend the afternoon exploring Jeju City before visiting Dongmun Market. Fresh seafood, local specialities, and families out for dinner make it one of the island’s liveliest places after dark.

Take the ferry to Udo Island and explore its beaches, coastal roads, and volcanic scenery. Back on Jeju, visit Seongsan Ilchulbong, the volcanic crater known as Sunrise Peak. Along the shoreline you may spot Haenyeo divers working the shore in wetsuits, the female-only diving tradition that has sustained coastal communities here for centuries. Finish the day at Manjanggul Lava Tube, one of the world’s longest lava cave systems.

Today is dedicated to Hallasan, South Korea’s highest mountain. Trails climb steadily through changing vegetation zones before reaching the crater lake near the summit. On a clear day much of Jeju Island is visible below. Most people are quiet on the way down.

Fly back to Seoul and enjoy a final afternoon at leisure. Return to a favourite neighbourhood, do some last-minute shopping, or simply enjoy one more Korean meal before departure.

For us, Mongolia was definitely the highlight. We thoroughly enjoyed or local guides and drives and they were unfailingly knowledgeable, helpful and amusing. Their languages skills were excellent and we felt that we recieved real insight into this fascinating country. We were intinially drawn to the idea of this trip by the reports of the world class fihing and we were absolutely not disappointed. The fishing guide was first rate and we caught more fish than we could have hoped for - more than 25 each day - with the added bonus of being the only other people in sight for miles arround. AAT created a private ger camp for us on the Onon River and we enjoyed delicious food prepared by our chef in a beautiful unspoled atmosphere. They alo arranged for us to visit a nomadic family and spend time with them at home and organized a dinner with an anthropologist with expert knowledge of the region. AAT fullfilled their promise to tkae us to us to one of the world's best fishing destinations in comfort and style. We would be happy to travel with AAT again and will definitely recommend them to our friends.

For our Siem Reap/Angkor Wat journey, our party of two had a private driver and guide named Jak, who was a cheerful and knowledgeable companion, explaining the history, culture, architecture and religious significance of the sites while keeping it always fun. We moved efficiently from site to site, and finished with a boat tour of the fishing village on stilts at Kampong Pluk on the Tonle Sap Lake. During most of our trip we stayed at top-notch locally-owned hotels, but in Siem Reap we were at the excellent local Hyatt hotel. Absolute Asia and My Way Travel our outstanding local providers, less expensive than name-brand group tours, and customized to our interests and schedule.
